Course Overview
Satellite navigation, Google Maps, Microsoft Bing Maps - it appears that maps are becoming more widely used, understood and expected as a means of accessing and disseminating information. A consequence of this is that GIS is becoming more of a mainstream tool within local authorities. Senior managers are increasingly expected to understand, exploit and make decisions on investment in this growing area of technology.
The objective of this half-day training course is to de-mystify GIS/Mapping and explain how it can be of benefit through the use of practical examples. Many of the examples illustrate how different local authorities are using GIS to help meet the demands of the Efficiency Agenda and Service Transformation.
For those new to GIS, this course begins with a clear and logical explanation of what GIS is. The closing session of the course speculates on where the technology is moving and how it is likely to be applied in the future.
The course is specifically developed with senior managers and decision makers in mind; those who need a non-technical understanding of GIS technology and the benefits that it could realise for their department/organisation at both a practical and a strategic level. It is intended to be as relevant for organisations that have already rolled out solutions as for those who are still considering it.
